Objectives
This course provides engineers with a practical understanding of well testing principles and operations. It focuses on the purpose of well testing, test design considerations, surface and downhole testing equipment, data acquisition fundamentals, and operational safety requirements. The course emphasizes the application of well testing results to engineering decision-making, production evaluation, and field development throughout the well lifecycle, rather than detailed analytical calculations.
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
· Explain well testing fundamentals and describe the role of well testing in reservoir evaluation, production performance assessment, and field development planning.
· Identify the main types of well tests, including Drill Stem Tests (DST), production tests, and injection tests, and describe the purpose and application of each test type.
· Recognize the functions of key surface and downhole testing equipment used during well testing operations and understand their role in ensuring safe and reliable data acquisition.
· Describe the well testing workflow, including test planning, flow and shut-in periods, data collection, and coordination among drilling, testing, production, and reservoir engineering teams.
· Identify key operational and SSHE risks associated with well testing, including high-pressure operations, hydrocarbon flow, flaring, and H₂S exposure, and explain the importance of barrier management, hazard awareness, and controlled operations in maintaining safe testing conditions.
Recognize how well testing supports decision-making throughout the well lifecycle, from exploration and appraisal through development, production optimization, and reservoir management.
