DWE-B003 Surface Wellhead and X-Tree Design Standard

The learning progresses through the complete design workflow, starting from: Well integrity and barrier philosophy, To service condition definition (Pressure, Temperature, Material Class), followed by Technology Level selection, Product Specification Level (PSL), and Performance Requirement (PR), before concluding with the functional requirements and configuration of Surface Wellhead and Christmas Tree systems.

This course emphasizes that wellhead and X‑Tree equipment are not only mechanical systems, but safety-critical barriers that ensure pressure containment, structural integrity, and operational reliability throughout the well lifecycle.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role of Surface Wellhead and Christmas Tree systems as critical elements of the well barrier system for fluid containment
  • Understand and apply well integrity concepts, including:
  • Primary and Secondary barriers
  • Permanent vs Temporary barriers
  • Well classification: Non-flowing vs Eruptive
  • Define and interpret Service Conditions, including:
  • Pressure Rating relative to Maximum Expected Surface Pressure (MESP)
  • Temperature Rating and operational thermal envelope
  • Material Class selection based on fluid chemistry and corrosion risk
  • Apply the structured equipment design process, including:
  • Defining Service Conditions
  • Selecting Technology Level
  • Specifying Product Specification Level (PSL)
  • Defining Performance Requirement (PR)
  • Understand Technology Level classification (A, B, C) and its relationship to well severity, barrier integrity, and equipment design
  • Explain the role of PSL and PR in ensuring manufacturing quality, performance verification, and lifecycle reliability
  • Identify key components and configuration of Surface Wellhead and XTree systems, including their function in well control and safety
  • Recognize critical compliance requirements and limitations, ensuring that all design decisions are traceable, compliant, and fit-for-service
